“When Beethoven passed away, he was buried in a churchyard. A couple days later, the town drunk was walking through the cemetery and heard some strange noise coming from the area where Beethoven was buried. Terrified, the drunk ran and got the priest to come and listen to it. The priest bent close to the grave and heard some faint, unrecognizable music coming from the grave. Frightened, the priest ran and got the town magistrate. When the magistrate arrived, he bent his ear to the grave, listened for a moment, and said, “Ah, yes, that’s Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, being played backwards.” He listened a while longer, and said, “There’s the Eighth Symphony, and it’s backwards, too. Leonardo DiCaprio tried to make fun of his character with the line “I will just wait here”, when in fact that line wasn’t originally scripted. Everyone started laughing and James Cameron said that the line was “Too funny” to ignore it.
Depression is not something you can just buy a Hallmark card for. You can’t just mail one to someone with a prewritten greeting and tell them that you hope they feel better, but they should just get over it. Depression is the equivalent of being buried in a thirty-foot hole and having twenty shovels at your convenience, at arms-length away, but being too exhausted or indifferent to use even one of them to dig yourself out.
Depression isn’t like the weather; an umbrella can’t stop the storms from coming. They’ll just find another way in instead. The most inappropriate thing to do for someone with depression is to tell them that it will get better. That’s scripted bullshit and you probably know it. You don’t have to be perfect; you don’t have to hold their entire heart.
You just have to hold their hand.
